Entrance to Blarney Castle and Gardens

Entrance to Blarney Castle and Gardens

Blarney Castle, as viewed by the visitor today, is the third to have been erected on this site. The first building in the tenth century was a wooden structure. Around 1210 A.D. this was replaced by a stone structure which had the entrance some twenty feet above the ground on the north face. This building was demolished for foundations. In 1446 the third castle was built by Dermot McCarthy, King of Munster of which the keep still remains standing.

ENTRANCE TO GIANTS CAUSEWAY AND VISITOR CENTER

TOUR DESCRIPTIONThe stories:The Giant's Causeway is steeped in myth and legend. Carved from the coast by the mighty giant, Finn McCool, who left behind an ancient home full of folklore.Local people here believe that between the hexagons, the mythical features carved out in the rocks, and the tumbling sea, there is real magic. You may not always see it straightaway, but come to this place, stand on the stones, uncover the legends, use your imagination, and just wait. It won't be long until you feel it.The science:It is no surprise that this place is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A geological wonder with over 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the Giant's Causeway is the result of intense volcanic and geological activity. The Causeway provides a glimpse into the Earth's most ancient past - an epic 60 million year-old legacy to the cooling and shrinking of successive lava flows. The Causeway Coast Way Car Park is available 24 hours, up the Causeway Road, for walkers to access the Causeway Coast Way.
